History
First 5 Ventura County launched its "Neighborhoods for Learning" (NfL) initiative in 2000. NfLs are community-based collaboratives, implementing school readiness strategies based on the unique cultural, ethnic, linguistic, socio-economic and special needs of their communities. The NfL initiative has resulted in eleven (11) geographically defined, unique projects throughout Ventura County. Planning and implementation of the Neighborhoods for Learning aligns with the initial vision of the Commission by: involving local community members in program design, governance and implementation; improving access and utilization of readiness services, health care and family empowerment activities; identifying and building services on existing capacity; and providing a meaningful role for parental participation.
Family Resource Centers at Neighborhoods for Learning and satellites are an important community-based center for family support services such as parent education, literacy training, and links to health services. Neighborhoods for Learning have developed these centers as one-stop-shop locations where families can go to receive parenting information and be linked to other health and social services. The NfLs are an invaluable gateway to increased utilization of health and family strengthening services available to families in need.
