1. Make sure that your child is neither tired or hungry when you shop. It's important to maintain your child's daily routine. Postpone shopping if it will interfere with the child's regular nap or feeding time.
2. Prepare your child before you go. Explain two or three simple rules for shopping trips and tell your child what will happen if rules are broke.
3. Take along a snack, a favorite toy, blanket, or book from home. These familiar things can provide some comfort to a young child.
4. Make a game of shopping by having your child "I spy" a color, fruit, shape or letter. You can also keep your child busy by allowing him to put things in the cart or help count out the number of items you need.
